The Garden Year: November 2021

Hello there and welcome back to my garden linky, which opens at the start of each month and stays open for the whole month - meaning you can link up at any time. You’re welcome to link any posts that have a garden theme - this could be your garden, the plants you’re growing or the gardens you visit, or anything in between - just so long as it’s related to gardening.

Plants in their prime this month

  • Viburnum

  • Autumn flowering camellias

  • Smoke bush (Cotinus coggyria)

What to do in the garden this month

  • Clear fallen leaves

  • Raise pots onto pot feet to prevent water logging, and insulate outdoor containers from frost by wrapping in bubblewrap

  • Plant your tulip bulbs

  • Put out bird food to encourage winter birds into your garden

The Japanese Garden at Barnsdale

If you asked me, I’d say I probably wasn’t a Japanese Garden fan, but there’s something about this one. The planting is minimal, and it’s all very calming.

Maybe the attraction was that it was so different to many of the other gardens at Barnsdale. Maybe it was the raked gravel that really gives the impression of calming water.

The bamboo is large, and also creates fencing.

And the stones that weave their way through the gravel tempt you into believing there’s water there too.

It’s definitely a place for mindfulness, and while on our visit there was little colour - other than green - the information on display showed the most shocking pink and beautiful plumes of Astibe, would be a great addition.

See the other Barnsdale gardens I’ve shared here.

Post Comment Love 29-31 October

Welcome to this week’s #PoCoLo - a friendly linky which I co-host with Suzanne, where you can link any post published in the last week. We know you’ll find some great posts to read, and maybe some new-to-you blogs too, so do pop over and visit some of the posts linked and share some of that love. If you were here last week it was great to have you along, if you’re new here this week we’re pleased you’re here.

At work during the week I said that I feel like I’ve missed a month or two this year, and I stand by that. On Monday it’s November, and it’s been another funny old year again so far hasn’t it? We’ve only had our heating on once so far this autumn, which is really no bad thing. Both MOH and I were brought up on the ‘put another jumper on if you’re cold’ but we haven’t even had to do that, yet - long may it continue!

I’ve a typically unseasonal photo this week too, it’s from the gardens we stayed in back in August - and these plants are also on my plant wish list. But you know I’m making progress there as this year I finally remembered to buy some alliums in time to plan them, along with some tulips too, so hopefully my spring will be looking more colourful for that.
