Poolside at John Lewis with Sunnylife

Remember that hot spell, the one that some are referring to as our summer? Yes, well I hope it's not our summer, but that one - in the midst of the heat I popped along to a pool party at John Lewis at Oxford Street and the weather couldn't have been better for it.

The Poolside I'm talking about though was indoors on the third floor - and is open to the public until 12 May - so it really doesn't matter what the weather's like outside.  Although wouldn't it be good for it to be warmer than the six degrees that's forecast for tomorrow, the last day of April, surely the zaniest of months for weather so far this year.  (By the way 2018, that's not a challenge!)

What a welcome to Poolside at John Lewis, a pretty cocktail complete with petals
Arriving on the third floor at John Lewis' Oxford Street store I immediately spotted a riot of colour and headed in that direction. It wasn't long before I held the pretty cocktail above in my hand and entered the zone that was pretty much a one stop holiday shop, complete with plenty of inflatables by Sunnylife.

The inflatables were great fun, and for this one I'd go as far to say it was FAB (sorry!), but you know what I mean...

An inflatable like a FAB ice lolly

By the Poolside there were plenty more inflatables: toucans, doughnuts, pineapples, flamingos and unicorns to name just a few, not forgetting the watermelon ring and the clever 'virtual' pool.  It looks real doesn't it, but it's not - it's a place where you can paddle without getting wet, but you have to mind your head on the mirrors as you leave the pool!

Inflatables in the 'pool' - a toucan and pineapple, what else?

There's plenty more too - summer hat anyone?  I hope it won't be too long before these will be needed again.

straw hats - hello sunshine, hello summer - but where's it gone?

And it seems that pom-poms and pineapples that we've seen as interiors trends aren't just for interiors - yay! - as this straw bag and sarong show.

I was quite taken with these lemon wedge pouches, and not just because they matched my shoes (but that could have been part of the reason, I'll admit).  I think they'd be useful for all kinds of things, on the beach to keep things sand-free, or to prevent your suntan lotion covering everything it shouldn't, or maybe just a fun bag as an accessory or for your lunch.

You can see I've given this some thought can't you?

I mentioned a riot of colour at the start of this post and I stopped to take a closer look as I left the pool - it really was my kind of colourful place, complete with zingy colours and fun touches too, like the parrot on the jar with lemons and limes.

But even if colour - or so much colour - isn't your thing, there are still more subtle ways to add some zing to your summer. Whether that's the cute beaded cactus table linen, the colourful bowls, or the cushions.

Dip into summer cushion and one of those chairs again

And yes, it's another of 'those' chairs - I've had to look up their name, it's an Acapulco Chair, I thought it only right as this is the third picture I've shared of this style on my blog so far this year.  Had you noticed I might be slightly smitten?!

Some shiny Alessi table accessories

On Sunday after enjoying a celebratory pint with MOH following his 10k run we took advantage of being in town and headed off to the Alessi flagship store for a spot of shopping. Well it would have been rude not to.

You see, with a new table on the way we decided we wanted some new table accessories. Our new table is white glass, so we wanted something equally modern - but still practical - to show it off and after some pre-shopping internet browsing soon settled on something chrome.

It's very likely - given our current behaviour - that we'll leave a couple of coasters on the table at all times, so we wanted some that we'd be proud to leave there. We left the Alessi store with these:

They were a bit of a bargain. They were only two in the shop and both were ex-display, so we were offered - and accepted - a discount on these.

That was handy as we hadn't finished selecting our purchases just yet.

We were also keen to buy some kind of centrepiece. We often have fruit on the table but wanted an upgrade to our Denby bowl that we currently use. There's nothing wrong with it, but a new table called for something else.

And while we wanted something practical - to put fruit in still - I didn't want another bowl to store somewhere when it wasn't in use. This Blow Up Basket (which doesn't blow up at all) was perfect for us.

I haven't unpacked it yet, so you'll have to make do with a picture of the box!  With fruit in it's a fruit bowl. And without fruit it's a kind of modern art sculpture. Perfect.

And I finally got around to buying the trivet I've been lusting after since I saw it at the Christmas in July event I went to, erm last July.

It really is very clever as it'll fit any size dish - you just place the knobbly, jack-like pieces so they fit under your dish.

And yes, the man in the shop knew what I meant when I asked for the Jacks trivet - he had to explain it to his assistant after we left. In case you're struggling with the Jacks comparison, take a look here.

So a successful trip, and we managed to leave the shop without looking at the cutlery or buying one of their iconic juicers. Although for the latter it was a very close call...

I think MOH was expecting to also leave with some new place mats. And while I don't like to disappoint we already have two sets and really don't need another. I do have a plan though for giving one set a bit of a revamp. I think I should have enough time before the table and chairs arrive to put that plan into action.

Until then, I think I'm done with table-related shopping.

Can you hear MOH sigh with relief?

The future's bright...

Well on the High Street it is at least!  On a recent trip to Oxford Street I was struck by how colourful the displays were, so I thought today I'd share what I found. I saw all of these and more on visits to John Lewis, Debenhams, BHS and House of Fraser.

So if we buy what's in the shops now, and let's face it there's a high chance we will, then we'll have colour in our bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms and kitchens.  So let's get started...

Well I'm a sucker for nice crockery (remember these bowls at West Elm) and it was a window display with these items which drew me back into the shop and looking for the homeware department.

Another exciting discovery was the West Elm concession at John Lewis. Im still in love with their bowls!

Right moving on - and away from the bowls - the cushions in Debenhams were definitely striking.

Not everything needs to be full on colour for it to be colourful. This photo frame caught my eye and is a lovely way to introduce colour into a room.

While crisp, white bedlinen is a treat (except for when you need to iron it!) there's a lot of colourful bedlinen available too. I was pleased to see there's still quite a bit of yellow around, that's especially useful for me as we have pops of yellow in our bedroom.

And then there were the towels! I fell in love with these bobble-edged ones in House of Fraser and did well to leave them on the shelf. The hedgehogs and the ducks were cute and a fun way to introduce some character in your bathrooms.  And something I'd not noticed before was towels coordinating with bedding, so you can get the look right through into your en-suite. Clever.

So as you can see, my browse around the department stores in Oxford Street was quite a colourful experience. I love colour - in our house and wearing it - but do you? How do you "do" colour?
