Trying some brush lettering

* This post contains items that were gifted by the London Graphic Centre

It was good to take things a little slower this last weekend, and it gave me the perfect opportunity to test out those dual ended Brush pens and pigment liners which I received as part of the parcel from the London Graphic Centre, which they sent for the purposes of this review.

As I said in yesterday’s post, lettering - or calligraphy, as we called it then - has been a craft I’ve always been partial too, but along the way, a bit like actually writing it’s fallen by the wayside. There’s a new magazine out which I’ve been eyeing up, which has reignited my interest, so when the London Graphic Centre asked what crafts I liked, there was no hesitation.

I’m a bit rusty though. But that hasn’t stopped me, as they say, practice makes perfect. And if it doesn’t bring perfection, it definitely brings confidence and enjoyment and improvement. I’ve seen that even in a just short time. I started small, and then moved onto some practice sheets - the less said about the Fs the better.

As impatient as ever though, I wanted to try to create a quote and add some colour blending. It may sound like running before I could walk, but I was pleased with the results - friends and family can now expect ‘lettered’ cards. Just saying.

I decided that I could create beautiful results, and build my confidence, by tracing the quotes and the Marker Pad sent by the London Graphic Centre was just the thing as the outline of the quote was easily visible, and with it held in place by some pretty washi tape, I was off.

There is beauty in everything.

it’s true, there is - and this was something I reminded myself as some of my lettering was wider than the quote I was copying from - but I’m human, not a machine, and even the neatest writer has variations in their lettering, I’m sure. As you can tell, I was keen to move onto the colour blending part.

For the quote above I went freehand adding the yellow and lilac pastel colours on top of the pastel pink with great results. If you know me, you’ll know pink and orange is one of my current favourite colour combinations, including my hair (only a section of it as all over might be a bit too much even for me). My hairdressers have a bowl of retro sweets on the reception desk, and I always fish out the Fruit Salads, giving the Black Jacks a wide berth. On my last visit my hairdresser made the connection between the sweets and my hair dye combo, which really is quite unintentional, but no bad thing!

Realising that I’d hit on this winning colour blending combination through pure chance and personal preference, i wondered which other colours would work. Not wanting to mess up any great (or even not too bad) artworks, a key was needed, and quickly created.

It’s already proven to be really useful. And I suspect as my brush pen collection grows, let’s face it - it’s going to, it will be added to.

I wanted to try more though, so found another quote - Today is the perfect day to be be happy - and off I set again. I thought I’d try this one using the pigment liners, but being such a colour fan, I couldn’t bring myself to do a plain black and white version.

Overall, I’ve had a productive weekend, and a great reintroduction to lettering. I’ve done more than these two, and am already seeing improvements and bravery with the colours, but more on that another day.

And look, I even attempted to conquer my fear of Fs. Perfect (well, good enough).

PoCoLo

Reflecting on my week #106

* This post contains items that were gifted by Tesalate and the London Graphic Centre

Ah, what a week. Midweek I thought I’d succumbed to the lurgy that seems to be doing the rounds, and so sensibly took myself off home for a lemsip. Turns out I wasn’t, but it’s better to be safe than sorry hey? Especially when working in a small and densely populated office.

Then Friday brought a ‘streaming’ eye, peculiarly a few days after MOH, and both of our left eyes. This time though I made a tactical error of going with contact lenses and not popping my glasses into my bag. By the end of the day cue one swollen and sore eye, and that’s with the lens discarded. Salt water eye washes helped a little, but eye drops have helped more, and now my eye and eyelid are back to their normal size, there’s less streaming and it no longer feels like there’s grit in my eye either, so that’s all a positive.

It’s grim to feel under the weather though, but a trip to watch Charlton play helped. Not only was it a good game (they drew in the end) but it was good to give my eye a bit of a rest too. Before we left home I’d persuaded MOH to pop some shopping bags into his coat pockets so we could pick up supplies on the way home. I’m not sure he was convinced, but it all worked out and there was also time for an impromptu lunch out too.

Fog at the Thames Barrier
Fog on the Thames

Sunday morning he headed out on his bike, returning with these pictures of a foggy Thames and Thames Barrier. You can’t see where river meets the sky, and if it weren’t for the iconic structure I’m not sure you’d believe that it was the RiveR Thames at all.

In sunnier developments, this sand free beach towel gifted by Tesalate arrived and I’m looking forward to putting that to the test when we head off to Barbados next month - I can’t wait!

More on that to follow, but in the meantime I’m really pleased with the design of this lightweight towel, which comes with its own storage pouch.

This week I’ve also been trying my hand at some brush lettering using some of the items sent by the London Graphic Centre, starting small before practicing some modern lettering and colour blending. While it was clear I need more practice - it’s been a while since I’ve done anything like this, but it’s something I really want to get back into. I’ve a feeling I’ve got an early example of my work upstairs somewhere, so will look that out and share if I find it.

We realised that this weekend is probably going to be our last chance to get out into the garden this year - eek! And with the grass being overtaken with leaves, we knew we should. MOH is a bit of a leaf fiend, and set about sweeping up piles to ‘lawn mower’ over. By the time he finished you could see the grass again, though of course this morning more leaves (though not as many) have taken their place.

leaves in our garden - just one or two

He tackled the leaves, I wrapped up pots in bubble wrap to protect them from any frosts. The agapanthus too are covered in fleece to give them the best chance next year. Our new pots are bubble wrapped, though they were harder to lift than the more traditional round pots, so MOH’s muscles were needed. I think they were harder as being square/oblong they were less easy to rock and manoeuvre, although it could also be that I was having a particularly weak moment! Either way, our garden is all set for winter - even if I’m still in denial about the time of year.

How can it be so close to the end of November, and so close to Christmas. I’m sure each year, it comes round more quickly…

Post Comment Love 22-24 November

Hello there and welcome to this week’s #PoCoLo a friendly linky where you can link any post published in the last week.

It’s both a bit of a special and a sad #PoCoLo this week. Sad because it’s Morgan’s last week as Co-Host, some two hundred editions after we both started out after taking over as hosts from Vicky at the start of 2016. I’m not sure either of us knew what we were taking on, or quite how we were going to manage it, but I know I was glad to have Morgan alongside me.

I’m not sure if I ever told Morgan this, but as you’ve guessed, I’m about to. When I first started blogging back in 2013 (wow, that’s a while ago!) Morgan’s was one of the first blogs I discovered and read. At the time I had no idea what a milieu was, but I was enjoying reading her posts, and lots of other blogs too - I now wonder how I managed to read so many, and I kind of miss that part about blogging. We connected on social media, like you do, and life went on, as it does.

But anyway, when Vicky got in touch and asked us both to take over as co-hosts, it was an instant yes from me and there was no ‘blog checking out’ needed from me. The summer after we started to host #PoCoLo we met up with each other and with Vicky, at a blogging conference, possibly BritMums. It turned out to be a great day to get to know each other, and we met some of our regular linkers too that day, who I think were surprised we didn’t know each other before. Well in real life anyway.

I’ll truly miss Morgan as Co-Host, but like all of you I wish her every success in what’s up next for her. Thanks Morgan, it’s been a blast.

So if this is Morgan’s last #PoCoLo as Co-Host, what about next week?

Well, there’s news here too. We’ve been ever so lucky, and from next week I’ll be joined by a new Co-Host, and one I think most of you will know, Suzanne from Chickenruby. Thanks Suzanne, I’m looking forward to the next phase of #PoCoLo with you.

And as ever, amongst all this news, there’s a linky fighting to get out. As ever I’m certain you’ll find some great posts to read, and maybe some new-to-you blogs too, so do pop over and visit some of the posts linked and share some of that love.
