Our frosty garden... in the sun

Inspired by many of the posts in last week's How Does Your Garden Grow I thought I really should venture out into our garden. I wondered if I too had bulbs, and if my rhubarb was doing anything interesting or if the plants in the greenhouse needed watering (the answer to this always seems to be yes). Our North-facing garden can be pretty chilly especially near the house at this time of year, but following a crisp frost the sun came out so I took that as my cue and dug out my camera.

I know frost pictures are beautiful, but I'm a sun-loving girl at heart so with the sun warming things up nicely I shoved open the conservatory doors and headed out into the garden for the first time this year. There was still some of the morning's frost on show and some of the plants, especially the hostas and the Fatsia were drooping a little.

Others though seemed to be coping with the cold a little better and my alpines basket seemed the happiest of all.

I discovered some ice in my hanging metal pots and was surprised by its thickness, the thermometer in the greenhouse was registering a low of -3.2 so for this to be the only ice I found is perhaps more surprising. I've hung the pots upside down to prevent them filling up again.

The roof of the greenhouse looked pretty though.

On the remnants of our veg beds the parsley is thriving - it's one plant I can't grow from seed even after following the well known tricks. But thankfully it's pretty rampant in my dad's garden so I know I can always get a top-up from there if I need one. The yellow chard looks pretty, I'm not sure if it'll be any good for eating but I'm going to keep my eye on it.

The strawberry plants - those in the pot and in the ground - are faring better than the rhubarb right now, although there are signs of life on one of the crowns.

The sun was hitting the end of the garden and with two jumpers, a scarf, jeans and wellies it was quite comfortable in this spot for a short while. These primulas are the ones I inherited from a municipal garden last May when it was being replanted - they're clearly happy with this as they've been in flower now since the summer.

There are signs of bulb activity throughout the garden, and I was reminded that I'd moved a whole load of bulbs which were dug up last year when we replaced our patio. This also jogged my memory that I didn't get to plant my alliums, so unless someone plants them soon they won't be doing very much at all...

The Sedums too are starting to do their thing, with little Brussels sprout like buds appearing at the base of the old stems.

Back nearer to the house there's a small pop of colour from some mini cyclamens - they really are beautiful plants and I really must get some more, and larger ones to add around the patio.

So in in all it was quite promising. The only downside appears to be part of one Jasmine plant that's looking a bit brown and crunchy - it's a bit annoying as its one that's taken me ages to grow up the fence to get to the trellis, but at least it's not the whole plant.

Have you ventured out into your garden yet this year?

Bring on a focussed 2015!

Last year was the first year I'd heard of let alone chosen a word for the year, and I chose active - it just felt like the right word for me, so that was that - it was my word. It worked well for me and so I was up for choosing another word for this year. Once again I had an inkling of what my word should be, but having discovered Susannah Conway during the summer's #Augustbreak Instagram challenge I was keen to work through her "Unravelling 2015" workbook. I wondered if my word would change at all - it didn't, but it almost did and I've spent some time talking myself into the word I first thought of!

That word is Focus - it's a good word and it will help me this year I'm sure, but it didn't sound as exciting as some of the other words I considered. I also can't claim it's in the "make my heart sing" category but I'm pretty sure it's what I need as while balance, energise and direction are good, each of those are much more helpful if they're focussed.

For me, Focus is about getting the things I need to done, alongside the things I want to do, it means flitting (slightly) less between projects but not necessarily having less projects to start with and of course, there's a camera angle too...

I definitely need to apply my word to my running as it's a bit sporadic right now, I don't think the weather's helping but, yes more focus here and some drier, warmer days would help too. Then there's my new bike that's arriving at the weekend (I hope) so I'll need some determination and focus to master the hills around here. I rather daftly and perhaps optimistically mooted the idea of a cycling holiday to MOH just after Christmas, so now we're considering that. Considering here means MOH is totally signed up for it, while I'm considering what on earth I've let myself in for! It does look beautiful though, if not a little exhausting, cycling up to 50km a day - but I said that before about walking 20+ kilometres before our first walking holiday, and I've managed a couple of those more than ok.  Even so, does anyone know what the hills are like in Bavaria?!

This year will also see me return to work and continue with my blog, so I'll need to strike the right balance there too. I'm hoping it'll also be the year where we can finally get rid of all the cardboard boxes, but not just yet as we'll still need a few while we get the spare bedoom decorated. We'll also get our very tiny porch sorted out so it'll only leave the conservatory needing work, which is going to take some serious planning and hopefully not so much serious cash. I'm also planning some sewing machine mastery, so watch out for that, oh and continue to improve my photography. I may even switch the camera onto manual.

Holiday-wise I still hope to pack them in, in fact we're heading off to Dorset at the end of the month, hopefully the snow will stay away and we get cold, bright days and the village pub is warm and toasty! I've already mentioned the Bavarian cycle trip, there'll be some Norfolk trips too and more exploring around the UK and maybe even something further afield. I'm still working on that!

And on top of all that I'm signing up to the intention to be kind to myself. Erm, yes - we should all be kinder to ourselves.

So that's me, what have you got planned for this year?

Upcycling an old picture frame

One of the (many) things we discovered when we cleared under our bed as we emptied our bedroom to redecorate was a stack of old pictures that we'd never hung in our house, for whatever reason. But looking at them again years later there was one that could be hung in our top bedroom, but it needed some work first as the reddy-wood frame didn't match the room.

So armed with a pot of paint, some newspaper and some cardboard I set about changing that one afternoon.  As I dismantled the picture a scrap of Jim Carrey Ace Ventura notepaper flew out but more on that later, left only with the wooden frame I set up my impromptu painting workbench in the conservatory. Before painting though I wiped the frame so that it was clean - and found that one of those furniture wet wipes did just the job.

I used eggshell paint similar to Farrow and Ball's Skimming Stone colour as I wanted to tone down the redness of the wood. I decided to go with a solid colour, rather than a paint wash mainly because it looked much better that way. The cardboard from a recent online shopping delivery came in handy to rest the painted frame on so it wasn't in contact with the newspaper.

After the second coat was dry I was ready to reframe the picture, which I'd bought during a long stopover at Singapore airport in the late 1990s as I travelled back from a trip to Australia.

The Jim Carrey Ace Ventura slip of paper that fluttered out explains the picture which is supposed to be my name - Stephanie. I hope it is my name and not something rude or offensive and I discover after all these years that I've been had!

Anyway the symbols and their meanings according to Jim Carrey are:

  • Birds:  happiness
  • Bamboo:  progress
  • Butterfly:  blessings
  • Fish:  wealth
  • Flower:  success

Which all make for a very pretty and colourful picture, which looks great in its new frame.

And we've even got it on the wall in the top bedroom, between the elephant picture we brought back from India and the salmon picture from Canada. The frames are fixed top and bottom as they're on a sloping wall as this room is in our roof where more normal straight walls are a rarity!

I'm quite pleased with my impromptu painting session, and the addition to the travel pictures in this room. And it's another job I can tick off my list!
