The Wideacre Trilogy, books 2 and 3

It's been a couple of weeks since I finished these books and even now looking back on them, it's still easy to immerse myself in the story.  After I finished the first book, simply titled Wideacre, I was keen to get started on the next one.  I already told you that I read the start of the second book hungrily, trying to work out who was the lead character, and let me just say that book 2 - The Favoured Child was just as good.

As you'd expect it picks up the story from before but this time focuses on the two Lacey children and only one of them can be the favoured child, but which one is it?

Following the fire at Wideacre the remaining family live elsewhere on the estate and although the children believe themselves to be cousins, are brought up more like siblings. The cousin/sibling thing is important, and each of the children have similarities to their Lacey parents and you can feel life repeating itself, as it so often does.

There's friendship, loyalty, love, heartbreak, deception and sheer bloodymindedness in this book which once again I couldn't put down.  Towards the end of the book, the introduction piece becomes clearer and you have to wonder how and where it will all end.

Meridon, the final chapter

Once again I broke my rule of paying for kindle books, and immediately started on the final book. I was in for a surprise though as the setting was completely different and Meridon, the central character is a gypsy girl.

This book was no less compelling, but it felt a bit left field, even though there were clear likenesses to the strong female characters in the previous book - red hair and riding skills.  I wasn't sure how this related to the story, but carried on reading as you've probably already realised I was hooked.

The plot turns and Meridon arrives in Wideacre, a place that's familiar to her even though she's never been there before. I found this part the most far fetched part of the books but I also recognised that the author needed to connect the stories.

At times too, it felt like the main character was going to fizzle out - and maybe she does, or maybe not, that would be telling wouldn't it?

For me the story picked up again and even though I was willing her to make different choices, she didn't always!

I'm still in that book hangover period where I can't quite manage to start another book as I'm still pondering what I might have done differently, either writing the book or as the main character. I haven't come up with anything concrete, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed the whole series, and who knows, maybe the next book(s) I read will be just as compelling - but let's hope they don't all make me break my low-spend rule!

Have you read the Wideacre trilogy by Philippa Gregory?

Post Comment Love and Bloggers Showcase 1 - 3 December 2017

Hello there and welcome to December - eek! Welcome to Post Comment Love, where any post you've written in the last week is welcome. If you were here last week it was great to see you, if you're new here then hello, I know you're going to find some great posts linked up. I know that as every week Morgan and I are spoiled.

My busyness at work is continuing and I'm arriving home each night mentally tired. I know help is on the way, and I know time spent training my two new recruits will be time well spent, but I also know I'll feel a little less effective (even more than now!) while that happens. But I will persevere, I'm good at that.

I'm off today and if I'm honest, not only do I need it, I'm also really looking forward to it. Unsurprisingly my home life  - and its organisation - has suffered from not being around so much and while I have way too much on my to do list for one day, I'm kind of looking forward to it too.

My picture this week is more of a reminder more than anything else. A reminder to look out my hat and start wearing it as it's been pretty chilly out there hasn't it?

A year going left: Almshouses and the Power Station

Well this month, I have actually walked left as I've left the office. Not as much as I'd like, but one sunny but chilly lunchtime that's exactly what I did. It wasn't far because as I headed towards the Power Station I realised, that despite it being one of Greenwich's icon I'd not been close to it before. And it's quite big!

Greenwich power station and blue skies

And the skies were quite blue. Mostly.

But just before the power station was the pretty almshouses of Trinity Hospital, the wording around the sundial caught my eye. It's a long time since I learnt Latin at school, and so was none the wiser until I checked with Google later.  A time for everything, more apt that I"m sure it realises.

OMNIA TEMPUS HABENT, A TIME FOR EVERYTHING

Walking towards the chimneys of the power station I spotted something else - I'm not even sure what to call this one, and stood even less chance with the Latin. This one translates to "and a time to every purpose under the heaven" so I'm guessing this is related to something more astronomical.

ET SUIS SPATIIS TRANSEUNT UNIVERSA SUB CAELO, AND A TIME TO EVERY PURPOSE UNDER THE HEAVEN

ET SUIS SPATIIS TRANSEUNT UNIVERSA SUB CAELO, AND A TIME TO EVERY PURPOSE UNDER THE HEAVEN

But look at those chimneys, I was fascinated by the black, presumably iron, outline, and by the brick repairs in the photo below.

Look at the brickwork on the power station

It just goes to show that many buildings have stories to tell. I made another discovery too on that short walk, and that was a pub I've never seen before - I know, unreal - and I didn't even go in. It looks like a traditional local doesn't it, I am wondering though if it's got potential for a quiet(ish) after work drink when the pubs in the town centre start getting even busier as Christmas approaches. Maybe some research is needed...

And I discovered a pub I'd never seen before too

And one last picture - and yes, it's more brickwork - there was a row of terraced houses which had the glazed bricks below the rope feature and more usual bricks above, not every row of terraces have that, do they?

brickwork - how pretty is this

The weather right now is seriously testing my resolve to get out there at lunchtimes. I keep saying I prefer the bright and chilly winter days to the wet and damp ones, and I do, but deep down I'd much prefer it was a little warmer!

I'm interested to see what next month's update on my year going left will bring, as l've no firm plans, other than to go left of course!
