Plants in their prime this month

  • Winter flowering clematis

  • Pansies

  • Hellebores

  • Holly

What to do in the garden this month

  • Check your winter protection is still securely in place

  • Insulate outdoor taps to prevent them from freezing

  • Take hardwood cuttings

  • Prune open-grown apples and pears, as well as acers, birches and vines.

  • Viburnum

  • Autumn flowering camellias

  • Smoke bush (Cotinus coggyria)

What to do in the garden this month

  • Clear fallen leaves

  • Raise pots onto pot feet to prevent water logging, and insulate outdoor containers from frost by wrapping in bubblewrap

  • Plant your tulip bulbs

  • Put out bird food to encourage winter birds into your garden
