Black & white photo: Plot 26

Exciting news here this week! Finally we've reached the top of the allotment list - I've lost count of the number of years we've been on the list, but it's been a while.  Last week we visited the site and were able to choose from two plots which had become available; the first had been used last year but was now covered in weeds and was on the edge of the site. The other hadn't been used at all last year and was slap bang in the middle of the site, with its own crab apple tree.

Decisions, decisions.

In the end we opted for the second plot, and while it'll be more work we think it's the best of the two longer-term. The lady that showed us round agreed with our decision and urged us to call the council then and there, so we did. I've still to pick up the key but the paperwork is done, and it's all very exciting... in a hard work kind of way.

This is our plot:

PLOT 26: IN DESPERATE NEED OF SOME TLC

As well as the crab apple tree and besides the junk and compost heaps in the picture, it also has some rhubarb and strawberries, some poppies and some gone-to-seed parsnips, the remnants of some raspberry canes, a couple of flowering bushes and not so good, some bindweed. It also looks like there's been some foxes in one of the pallet compost bins too, so hopefully if they're still about they'll move on gracefully once we start clearing the place up.

Black & white photos: Chelsea Flower Show

On Friday evening we visited the Chelsea Flower Show, we'd been before but not for a few years so after watching it enviously on the television last year I was determined to get tickets this year. It lived up to my expectations, but there was just so much to see and I don't think anyone could do it justice in the two and a half hours we had.

It was much busier than I remembered too, and while we saw the show gardens and walked endlessly round the main pavilion we only got to see some of the artisan gardens as the crowds there were just too large. So note to self, next time get a day ticket!

There's so much to see and experience and you'll not be surprised to learn that I took lots of photos, many of which I'm sure I'll share here in the next few weeks or so. But today I thought I'd share some as a teaser in black and white.

Black & White photo: A corner of Tintagel Castle

Yesterday I shared the first part of our visit to Tintagel Castle where we explored the remains of the castle on the headland. I left it as we headed off to find a spot to eat our lunch and promised to share the second half of our trip next Saturday, but I couldn't resist sharing a black and white shot of the castle ruins on the mainland before then.

For me this photo is all about the texture and the light and I think that makes it a great shot for the black and white treatment, what do you think?
