Christmas gifts that aren't just for Christmas

I expect you're being bombarded with ideas for Christmas gifts right now, and if you're anything like me then you've probably still have more Christmas gifts to buy. I've made a start, but a slow one. I have crossed a couple of gifts off the list and more importantly have bought some marzipan and mint matchmakers, my Christmas essentials.

I've bought some mince pies too, but there's very little chance of those lasting if I'm honest. I have been thinking about gifts, and well, that's a start isn't it... As well as thinking of what I can buy family, I've been thinking about the types of gift that appeal more generally to me. More and more that's a gift that brings enjoyment throughout the year and despite my slide down The Orbit I'm not exactly a thrill-seeking kinda gal, so those kind of experience days aren't for me.

But membership, now that's a different matter

I'm already a member of the National Trust and it's a great way to see houses and gardens in all parts of the country in a cost effective way. They do a gift membership and say it's the membership "that opens doors (and gates too)" and I think it's a great gift to give. You'll know by the number of National Trust properties we visit, that we get good value for money from ours.

But if it's the buildings that are the attraction then perhaps a RIBA Friends of Architecture membership might work? As well as access to a programme of events which give the opportunity to learn something completely new and get out and about with RIBA's expert guides, there's also discounts at the RIBA shop and in the cafe and more.

Or if it's the gardens that appeal most, then maybe a gift membership to the RHS could be the thing to inspire someone's love of gardening. I hadn't realised until I looked into it for this post, as well as the four RHS gardens, of which I've visited two - Wisley and Hyde Hall, there are also many partner gardens that the member also receives free entry to.

Now that's given you something to think about hasn't it?

But do you know what, after all that exploring, there's often only one thing for it. And that's a cup of tea.

And tea with a difference makes the list too

These little, but great, boxes of tea from T2 Tea sum up what a Christmas gift should be for me. That's something you're familiar with, but is just that little bit special than our everyday brew and because it's a little bit special it's the thing you keep meaning to buy for yourself but often don't. Well at least not the first time anyway.

The gift boxes group together similar flavours of tea, so there's a Breakfast Club box and a London Calling box, plus many more.

And cake, you'll need cake

Yes, when I said there's only one thing on my mind after exploring, I was wrong. Because along with my cup of tea I'd happily have some cake. And you can have a selection box of Christmas Cupcakes delivered too - oh the wonders of the internet, and with thanks to Hummingbird Bakery.

What would you add to my list?

Getting ready for Christmas with LOVEThESIGN

This year Christmas seems to be well and truly underway already. It's only December today and already I've seen Christmas decorations up both in real life and pictures of my friend's trees. And while my decorations won't be out of the box until much nearer Christmas, somehow it seems that there's an excitement this year which I don't remember seeing last year.

Even though I'm not quite in Christmas decoration mode yet, like many of you I'm starting to plan our Christmas. I've recently discovered the LOVEThESIGN website and have been really impressed with the range of goods they have on their site. I thought it would be fun to share some of their Christmas items.

LOVEThESIGN was founded in 2012 and sells "Italian style" furniture and homewares, with 15,000 products in its catalogue including designer brands such as Alessi.

So for my Christmas table, I'd choose these - and yes you're right the tree wouldn't be on the table, but at 30cm high it could be a stunning centrepiece before the food arrived!

Every year I like to buy some new ornaments for our full sized tree, these caught my eye and would be a fun and fab addition to my ever-growing collection of baubles. And the plate below would be perfect for serving mince pies, wouldn't it?

I also liked the simplicity of the cards above, and while I'm still planning to make mine I think I could be tempted to have some of these in reserve, just in case.  The one item that I'd love to put on my wishlist though is the candlestick below. I love it's swirly but unfussy and simple design. And while I love it, sadly I think that with its price tag it would stay just there, on my wishlist. But what a wonderful piece full of fantastic craftsmanship.

    Tea and coffee with Alessi

Back in July I was invited to Alessi's press preview for their Autumn-Winter range at the Ily cafe in London's Regent Street. I walked into a full blown Christmas, which wasn't quite what I was expecting and must have been an unusual sight for the cafe's regular coffee drinkers.

I should warn you now, there's plenty of Christmassy things to follow, so if you have an aversion to Christmas as this time of year then you should look away now, as they say on the television.

There's been lots of research into making the perfect coffee pot and the Pulcina espresso coffee maker is the result of that research. To me it looks as if it's got a little beak and that's a design feature too - it's designed to be drip free, and if it works I'm sure it'll be welcomed by many.

I did like this “Quattro muri e due case” tray made of bamboo wood. It looked comfortable to carry and the perfect way to display Santa's note.

    A TRAY FOR SANTA

    A TRAY FOR SANTA

Would you believe the design for the kettle below is thirty years old?  It was designed by Michael Graves in 1985 (hey - how is this thirty years ago?) and to mark this anniversary he's redesigned the whistle changing the iconic little bird to a Tea Rex - ahem. That's a reference to Chinese culture where these beings symbolise strength and fortune. It looks great and is a bit of fun too.

    LADY SHY, TABLE LUMINAIRE

This lamp made of plastic looks stylish and would be good on a table or as a bedside lamp. It's called Lady Shy because the light source is at once visible and hidden, and is protected by the lamp structure that resembles a skirt blowing in the wind. But whatever, I think it's stylish and pretty minimalist.

You might have already guessed but the tea infuser above is designed by the same designer as the Tea Rex kettle.  And below is a pretty holder for your bottles, a very pretty way to stop them leaving a mark on your tablecloth,

Each year the Alessi release a Christmas ornament which I'm sure become highly collectible. This year's ornament is by Italian Laura Polinoro. If I'm honest it's not really my thing, but I can see how they could become collectable and something that collectors would want to add to their collection, but not me.

    XMAS FRIENDS ORNAMENT

    XMAS FRIENDS ORNAMENT

The last item I'm going to share was easily my favourite, and it's one I will buy at some point. It's polished chrome, looks like jewellery but is for use in the kitchen. I was bemused as to what it was, but once it was explained it was a trivet I was fascinated and I could see just how useful it would be. And super stylish too - but it still reminded me of jacks I used to play growing up.

The stars (or jacks) can be arranged to suit any size dish, large or small and then when it's done it can be hung on a hook or left on display. Great isn't it? At £29 it's a more expensive than other trivets I've bought, but then again this is something entirely different altogether, don't you think?

So there was lots to see at this event, and lots more that I can see will be added to the Design Classics of the future.  Thanks to Alessi for inviting me along, it was great to see these products up close.
